Arizona House Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress

Phoenix, AZ — The Arizona House State Government Committee just passed a resolution calling for the states to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. House Concurrent Resolution 2016 (HCR2016), led by Representative David Cook, passed by a vote of 8 to 1 receiving strong support from both sides of the aisle. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit U.S. Term Limits (USTL).

HCR2016 has the bipartisan support of more than thirty Arizona legislators who signed the term limits pledge promising to support the congressional term limits effort.

USTL Western Regional Director and Arizona resident, Ron Hooper spoke about the victory, “Today Arizona voted in a strong bipartisan fashion supporting the will of the voters. Congressional term limits took a huge leap forward through this victory in the Arizona House State Government Committee. We thank the members for their support.”

According to a recent poll conducted by RMG Research, a super majority (75%) of Arizona voters favor an amendment imposing term limits on Congress. 70% of voters also say that they would approve of having Arizona call for an amendment proposal convention for the specific purpose of enacting congressional terms limits.

Once HCR2016 and its sister resolution in the senate pass, Arizona will have the distinction of being among the first states in the nation to file an application for the states to convene for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress. When 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions on the topic, and he term limits amendment is approved, it must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
