A big win for We The People has happened in Utah! The Utah State House of Representatives passed legislation calling for an Article V amendment convention exclusive to the subject of putting term limits on Congress.
House Joint Resolution 12 passed the State House by a 45-27 vote. It will now be considered by the Utah State Senate.
The resolution is part of a national movement to fight careerism in Washington. Article V gives state legislators a way to make term limits on Congress a reality without needing congressional approval. For the convention to be called, 34 total states must pass similar legislation. If the convention proposes a congressional term limits amendment, 38 states must ratify it for it to be added to the U.S. Constitution.
The President of U.S. Term Limits, Philip Blumel said “88 percent of Utah voters support term limits on Congress, including huge majorities of Democrats, Republicans and Independents. This is a rare, truly bipartisan issue with overwhelming support.”
This effort in the Utah Legislature is led by State Rep. Timothy Hawkes of Centerville.
“Rep. Hawkes was an integral part of the process in getting the Utah House to make this historic call for congressional term limits,” added U.S. Term Limits Utah Coordinator Collin Pace. “Utah is taking the lead here in standing up for citizen-led government.”
Since 34 states must call for the Term Limits Convention to make it happen, U.S. Term Limits has spread its grassroots resources throughout the country. In addition to Utah, USTL is also targeting Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Colorado, South Carolina, Texas, Michigan, Missouri and Tennessee.
