Rep. Mackenzie Sponsors Congressional Term Limits Resolution in Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, PA – Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (District 187) is leading the way in Pennsylvania to term limit the U.S. Congress by sponsoring a House Resolution 37 for a national term limits amendment proposal convention. The resolution, with nine sponsors, was introduced in the Pennsylvania House on Friday, March 10, 2023. Twenty-five state lawmakers have signed the term limits pledge promising to vote in support of the measure.

Through Article V of the U.S. Constitution, 34 state legislatures can team up for a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the Constitution. The Term Limits Convention effort is being shepherded by the nonpartisan, advocacy organization U.S. Term Limits. Bipartisan spokespeople for the nonprofit in Pennsylvania are former state senators Andrew Dinniman, a Democrat, and John Eichelberger, a Republican.

According to Nick Tomboulides, Executive Director of USTL, “There are two ways to propose an amendment for term limits: through the Congress or through the states at a national convention. That is why it is important to get support from state legislators, and sponsors like Rep. Mackenzie, to call for a convention to discuss the details of the amendment.” Once proposed, the amendment must be ratified by 38 states in order to become law.

Tomboulides notes, “More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Mackenzie knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”

According to the latest Pulse Research opinion poll, Pennsylvania voters overwhelmingly support term limits for members of Congress. Support for term limits is broad across all political and demographic groups. An overwhelming 79% of voters approve of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that will place term limits on U.S. Senators and U.S. House Representatives. Large majorities also say that Congress members stay in power for too long, and that they’re more likely to support state lawmakers who help advance congressional term limits.
