New Poll IL-13: Rodney Davis Trailing, Vulnerable on Term Limits

Champaign, IL – According to a new poll conducted by RMG Research, Congressman Rodney Davis (R-13) is in danger of losing his seat, and will go down in a landslide if challenger Betsy Londrigan (D) highlights Davis’ opposition to term limits.

The poll, which was conducted from July 31st-August 7th, found that Londrigan currently leads Davis 43% to 41%, which is within the margin of error. But when voters are asked who they would support if Londrigan were to endorse term limits, which Davis opposes, Londrigan jumps out to a 15-point lead (46%-31%). Londrigan’s surge in support would come mainly from Republicans, independents and previous Davis supporters who favor term limits, the poll suggests.

The poll also shows that most voters are unaware of the fact that Rodney Davis opposes congressional term limits. When asked, “Do you happen to know whether Rodney Davis supports term limits for members of Congress,” 93 percent of voters either didn’t know Davis’ position or incorrectly said he supports the idea.

This gap in awareness presents a great opportunity to Londrigan to widen her lead. When voters in the 13th district, 77% of whom support term limits, learn of Davis’ opposition – they flock to Londrigan in droves. Assuming Londrigan herself also supports congressional term limits. If Londrigan does not emphasize term limits, the race remains a tossup.

The survey of 500 registered voters in Illinois 13th district was conducted online by RMG Research, Inc. from July 27-August 7th, 2020 using a representative sample to reflect the district’s population of registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.
