Dakota County Republican Party Calls on the Nebraska Legislature to Term Limit Congress

South Sioux City, NE – On July 25th, 2022, the Dakota County Republican Party unanimously passed a resolution calling on the Nebraska Legislature to pass an Article V application to propose a term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution to limit the number of terms members of the U.S. House and Senate can serve.

Article V of the Constitution of the United States specifies how amendments may be proposed; either two-thirds of both Houses of Congress or on the application of two-thirds of the state legislatures requiring Congress to call a convention for the purpose of proposing the amendment. The resolution passed by the Dakota County GOP endorses the effort to propose a Congressional Term Limits Amendment being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, U.S. Term Limits.

Cole Stewart, Vice Chair for the county party, commented on the resolution saying, “The Dakota County GOP believes that politicians should and must be encouraged not to form a career out of public service but to simply serve the citizens that elected them. Term limits on Congress would ensure that politicians are unable to form long-lasting careers in which they lose sight of how best to represent those that sent them to Washington in the first place.”

U.S. Term Limits Central Regional Director Aaron Dukette commended the resolution, saying, “The Dakota County GOP last night demonstrated that they stand alongside the overwhelming majority of American voters of all parties in supporting this long-overdue reform.”

According to recent national polling, “82% of voters of all parties continue to support term limits, including 87% of Republicans, 83% of Democrats, and 78% of Independents.”
