Rep. Frank Tomaszewski Files Term Limits Resolution in Alaska
Juneau, AK – Representative Frank Tomaszewski (District 34) has filed House Joint Resolution 22 (HJR22) to add Alaska to the list of states calling on Congress to propose a congressional term limits amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Like the other state efforts, HJR22 makes it clear to Congress that if they fail, Alaska and its fellow states will propose the amendment themselves. The effort is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit, U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
HJR22 has a groundswell of support in the Alaska legislature. Many state lawmakers committed their support by signing a pledge to cosponsor Rep. Tomaszewski’s resolution.
“It’s time for Congress to be accountable to the people they represent, ” said Philip Blumel, USTL President. “Term limits will help restore trust in our government and ensure that power is returned to the hands of the citizens.”
HJR22 has been assigned to the House State Affairs Committee for a vote before it makes its way to the house floor. Once HJR22 passes both the house and senate chambers, Alaska will join other states in the call for a national convention for the exclusive purpose of proposing term limits on the U.S. Congress.
Once 34 state legislatures pass similar resolutions and approve the term limits amendment language, the measure must be ratified by 38 states to become part of the U.S. Constitution.
