NJ-2 Poll: Van Drew Leads, But He’s Vulnerable on Term Limits

Atlantic City, NJ – According to a new poll conducted by RMG Research, Congressman Jeff Van Drew (R) leads his Democratic opponent Amy Kennedy, but Van Drew has an achilles heel: his opposition to term limits for Congress.

The poll, which was conducted from July 30-August 5th, found that Van Drew narrowly leads Kennedy 42% to 39%, which is within the margin of error. But when voters are asked who they would support if Kennedy were to sign the U.S. Term Limits pledge, which Van Drew opposes, Kennedy would jump out to an 11-point lead (45% to 34%).

If Kennedy signs the term limits pledge, she would triple her support among Republicans, from 3% to 9%, and gain 9 points with independents. Also, undecided voters – currently a fifth of the electorate – would break for Kennedy at a 12-to-1 rate if she came out for term limits. According to the poll, Van Drew has done an expert job concealing his opposition to term limits from voters. 91% of district voters either don’t know what Van Drew’s position is on term limits or incorrectly believe he supports it. That presents a major opportunity for Kennedy to make inroads with voters by campaigning on the issue.

The survey of 500 registered voters in New Jersey’s 2nd district was conducted online by RMG Research, Inc. from July 30th-August 5th using a representative sample to reflect the district’s population of registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.
