New Poll: Collins in Trouble, Vulnerable on Term Limits

Portland, ME – According to a new poll conducted by RMG Research, Senator Susan Collins is in danger of losing her seat, and will lose in a landslide if Sara Gideon highlights Collins’ opposition to term limits.

The poll, which was conducted from July 27-August 2nd, found that Gideon currently leads Collins 48% to 41%. But when voters are asked who they would support if Gideon were to endorse term limits, which Collins opposes, Gideon jumps out to a 16-point lead (50%-34%). Gideon’s surge in support would come mainly from Republicans, independents and previous Collins supporters who favor term limits, the poll suggests.

The poll also shows that most Mainers are unaware of the fact that Collins previously signed and broke a pledge to serve only two terms in the Senate. When asked, “Is the following statement true or false: In her first U.S. Senate campaign, Susan Collins signed a pledge to serve no more than 12 years in the Senate. She broke that pledge and now opposes term limits,” only 35% said it was true. Sixty-five percent of voters either said it was not true or weren’t sure.

This gap in awareness presents a great opportunity to Gideon to widen her lead. After Maine voters, 75% of whom support term limits, learn of Collins’ prior deception – they flock to Gideon in droves. Assuming Gideon herself also supports congressional term limits.

The survey of 500 registered voters in Maine was conducted online by RMG Research, Inc. from July 27-August 2nd, 2020 using a representative sample to reflect the state’s population of registered voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points. RMG Research is owned and operated by Scott Rasmussen.
