Jo Jorgensen Signs U.S. Term Limits Presidential Pledge
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Term Limits (USTL), the leader in the national, non-partisan movement to limit terms for elected officials, commends Libertarian candidate for president of the United States, Jo Jorgensen, for signing the U.S. Term Limits Presidential Pledge.
“I support term limits. Term limiting Congress can help make representatives more accountable to voters and curtail the ability of powerful incumbents to hand out favors to narrow special interests,” says Jorgensen.
She continued, “Congress’s 90% re-election rate, despite its 10% approval rating, is evidence that incumbency confers too many advantages. Term limits would reduce incumbents’ ability to build incestuous ties with special interests as well as their incentive to do so. This would help restore competition to our elections, and thereby reduce the concentration of power in the hands of an elite few.”
The U.S. Term Limits Amendment Pledge reads, “I, as a candidate for President of the United States, pledge to support congressional passage and state ratification of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would set term limits on service in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House as there are term limits on the President, as enacted by the 22nd amendment.”
USTL President Philip Blumel commented on the pledge, saying, “We applaud Jorgensen for signing the congressional term limits pledge.”
The Supreme Court ruled in the 1995 case U.S. Term Limits v. Thornton that congressional term limits may only be achieved by constitutional amendment. While the President does not have a vote nor a veto in this process, he/she has an important pulpit that may be used to get the amendment passed. President Trump promised to make term limits the number one priority in his 2016 contract with the American voter, yet he has done little to advance the effort.
Blumel noted, “More than 82% of Americans have rejected the career politician model and want to replace it with citizen leadership. The way to achieve that goal is through a congressional term limits amendment. Jo knows this and is willing to work to make sure we reach our goal.”
According to the last nationwide poll on term limits conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, conducted in January 2018, term limits enjoys wide bipartisan support. McLaughlin’s analysis states, “Support for term limits is broad and strong across all political, geographic and demographic groups. An overwhelming 82% of voters approve of a Constitutional Amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress.”
