Georgia Senate Committee Passes Resolution to Term Limit Congress
Atlanta, GA – Today, the resolution for congressional term limits passed the Senate Government Oversight Committee. SR28, a nonpartisan resolution sponsored by Sen. Bill Cowsert, has been coauthored by 16 lawmakers in the Georgia senate. The term limits convention effort is being shepherded by the nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization U.S. Term Limits (USTL).
According to Dr. John Cowan, Director of USTL’s Georgia arm, “There are four coequal branches of government. The collective state legislatures have the power to serve as a check and balance on an out of control federal government. Passing SR28 for term limits on Congress puts Georgia at the forefront of exercising its constitutional obligation.”
The resolution summary reads, “A RESOLUTION requesting that the United States Congress call a convention under Article V of the Constitution of the United States limited to proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to set a limit on the number of terms that a person may be elected as a member of the United States House of Representatives and to set a limit on the number of terms that a person may be elected as a member of the United States Senate.”
A poll taken by McLaughlin and Associates shows that 82% of likely voters in Georgia support term limits on Congress, including strong support across party lines. 83% of Republicans, 74% of Democrats, and 82% of independents in the poll support the reform. Only 9% said they do not support term limits.
Through Article V of the U.S. Constitution, 34 state legislatures can team up for a convention to propose a term limits amendment. 38 states must ratify the proposed amendment in order for it to be added to the U.S. Constitution. So far, fifteen states have passed resolutions for a national amendment proposal convention specifically naming term limits in the subject.
U.S. Term Limits is the largest and oldest term limits advocacy group in the country. We connect term limits supporters with their legislators and work to pass term limits on all elected officials, particularly on the U.S. Congress. Find out more at termlimits.org.
