Where Do the 2024 Presidential Candidates Stand on Term Limits?

June 22, 2023

Nikki Haley – SUPPORTS. Former U.S. Ambassador. Watch video on Haley’s term limit position here.

Tim Scott – SUPPORTS. South Carolina Senator. Watch video on Scott’s term limit position here.

Vivek Ramaswamy – SUPPORTS. Entrepreneur and author. Watch video on Ramaswamy’s term limits position here.

Doug Burgam – SUPPORTS. Governor of North Dakota. “I think term limits work best when they work uniformly,” he said on Plain Talk. He pointed out that the term limits amendment, which passed on the November ballot last year, doesn’t apply to state to other executive branch offices. “Governors can get termed out, but other people can stay forever,” he said, adding that certain “powerful lawmakers” can also stay in office for another eight years. “I support it,” he said of the state’s term limits amendment. “I don’t think there’s any value in applying it retroactively.”

Ron DeSantis – SUPPORTS. Former sponsor of USTL term limits amendment HJR6 and current Governor of Florida. Watch video on DeSantis’ term limits position here.

Chris Christie – SUPPORTS. Former Governor of New Jersey. Watch video on Christie’s term limits position here.

Will Hurd – SUPPORTS. Former Texas Congressman. “Too many elected officials simply want to stay in office. They like wearing the pin and being called Congressman, and so they start sacrificing their values. There needs to be term limits in place. Too many Mitch McConnells and Nancy Pelosis that should have moved on years ago.”

Asa Hutchinson – OPPOSES. Former Governor of Arkansas. He feels it’s problematic in the courts and even though he’s seen the polling, he’s still against it.

Mike Pence – SUPPORTS. Former Vice President of the United States. Listen to Pence’s term limits position here.

Donald Trump – SUPPORTS. Former President of the United States. Trump is a term limits supporter, having first come out for the idea in October 2016. Trump specifically endorsed the U.S. Term Limits (USTL) Amendment of three House terms, two Senate terms and no longer limit. Watch video on Trump’s term limits position here.

Joe Biden – OPPOSES. President of the United States. Biden spent 36 years in the U.S. Senate and has always opposed term limits. In 1996, he put his opposition on the record by voting against a bill, sponsored by Sen. Fred Thompson, which would have moved term limits forward.

Marianne Williamson – OPPOSES. A New York Times bestselling author. In a May 2019 town hall meeting,  Watch video on Williamson’s term limits position here.

No public position on congressional term limits:

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.– Lawyer and author.

Francis Suarez – Mayor of Miami.

Cornel West – Professor and progressive activist.

Ron Elder – Radio Host.

Want to help us improve on those numbers?

Contact the candidates who haven’t weighed in yet and ask where they stand. Go to: termlimits.com/potus2024. Pressure those who oppose it to consider changing their position. It is very important that we have a president, regardless of party, who is a vocal champion of our term limits effort.
