The problems this country faces in the new millinnium are enormous and too numerous to mention. A constitutional amendment providing for congressional term limitation is the first step toward solving all these problems. It will make all the others solvable.

Term limits represent a gate through which Congress must pass before it can reform itself and get on with the business of addressing the country's problems.

It is true that only Congress can reform itself and rein in the bureaucracy — but that cannot be done by the kind of Congress we have now. What is needed is a Congress that has the will to make these changes. This requires changing the makeup of the Congress, an essential reform which only term limits can accomplish.

Term limitation will accomplish a number of positive things, but one stands out: it will improve the quality of leadership of our congressional public servants by a quantum amount, by replacing careerists whose primary motives are reelection, with citizen legislators whose motives are to serve the country. Only with citizen legislators can the Congress address all our problems from an honest perspective.

The makeup of the Congress must be changed. We can no longer afford a Congress containing too many career politicians who put themselves and their careers first and the country last. It is time to let them know we put them there to serve the citizens of the country, and not themselves. It is time to remind them that in the United States government exists to serve the people, and not the politicians.

American citizens know this. Polls show that Americans want term limitation by margins as high as three-to-one, even four-to-one. This is an issue that separates American citizens, who want to recapture their government from a careerist-dominated Congress and its illegitimate bureaucratic offspring, the Beltway Elitists, who want to run our lives.

We have a God-given chance, perhaps a once-in-a-century opportunity to change the direction in which our nation is headed. The people are waiting to be led. If we, as a country, fail to seize this moment by providing the leadership to get term limits accomplished, than history will judge us harshly. Our children and their children will judge us harshly. We won't get a second chance.

For these reasons congressional term limitation is the most important issue of our time, because the future direction of the country depends upon it. There is no other way to restore government to the people. There is no substitute for term limits. There are many second steps, depending upon where you sit, but there is only one first step toward turning the country around.
