President Bush's misbegotten illegal immigration bill

President Bush’s misbegotten illegal immigration bill was beaten back last week in the U. S. Senate.

Bush was desperate to get results on something he had ignored for the first six-and-a-half years of his presidency.

It doesn’t seem out of line to ask the obvious question, “Where were you during that six-and-a-half years, Mr. President?”

And the answer is that he was not following the law. Likely listening to adviser Karl Rove, he was enforcing only those parts of the law that he liked.

Is selective enforcement of the law an impeachable offense? Perhaps it ought to be. Suppose a burglar were trying to get into your home and you called the police, only to be told that the cops don’t do breaking and entering, only bank robberies. Selective enforcement.

We should remember that Rudy Giuliani was a great Mayor of New York even before nine-eleven. Why? because he enforced every law on the books from jay walking to spitting on the sidewalk. That is when New York’s Finest became New York’s Finest, and New York City became a safe place to live, because the hoodlums had been driven out of town, if not for one offence for others.

— A simple lesson right under his nose that George W. Bush never learned. Instead, he had to depend on Senator Teddy Kennedy, the Chappaquiddick swimmer to carry the ball for him.

(See YTEDK.com about Teddy.)

The inescapable conclusion is that President Bush did not want to enforce border security. Newt Gingrich had it right when he said: “All you have to do is make it dramatically harder to get in the U.S. and dramatically harder to hire people illegally.” (See “Excerpted from Fox news Sunday with Chris Wallace” on these pages.)

What has our President been thinking for six-and-a-half years? Doesn’t he know that not only do the illegals continue to enter every year — how many millions we don’t know because neither he nor anyone else in government cares enough to try to find out the extent of the invasion?

Nor has our President seemed aware that our unsecured borders are a also highways for entry by the international Islamic terrorists, who want us all dead.

Does the President mean it when he says he wants to solve the immigration problem?

He can start by following existing laws and sealing the southern border.

He has a year and a half to show us his intentions.
