Citizens for Term Limits

Postponable Integrity

By Rense Johnson, Chairman, Citizens for Term Limits

Recently on the radio after church, I heard James Dobson carrying on about how years ago he promised never to vote for any candidate who would kill the unborn.

I am a right-to-lifer too, along with most of my friends.

But now we read how Dr. Dobson is making noises about starting another political party.

That’s just swell. That’s just dandy.

So that he can be holier than the rest of us Dobson wants to take an action which would go a long way toward guaranteeing a Republican presidential loss in 2008 — arguably one of the most critical elections in modern history.

I’ve had experience with this Focus on the Family guy before.

My daughter, who was one of Dobson’s subscribers, sent me one of the Focus newsletters, in which he said: “Two words keep ringing in my ears, Term Limits, Term Limits.”
Wow, I thought, I’ve gotta get in touch with this man. Would that be an endorsement? It sure sounded like one.

As luck would have it, I was soon to be visiting a friend in Colorado Springs, where Dobson has an entire zip code.

I could hardly believe my good fortune. Shortly after my arrival I phoned the Dobson office to inquire when I might call on the Great One.

Not so fast. It wasn’t going to be that easy. He sent an emissary to meet me for a brief visit. And that was as close to His Worthiness as I ever got. (I must have gotten a bad report.)

But I didn’t give up immediately. There followed many e-mail attempts, each answered by an underling who would explain that His Pompousness was just soooo busy that he didn’t have time even to respond. One time he was giving a speech, another in a meeting, another writing a book. And so it went, until even I, persistent as I was, gave up in disgust.

I wouldn’t say Dobson’s word was no good. I would just say that for Dobson, the idea of living up to his word seems to be postponable.
