Ignorance of the Law

by Rense Johnson, Chairman, Citizens for Term Limits

We all know that “ignorance of the law is no excuse.”
When you or I break a law we didn’t know existed, “ignorance is no excuse.”

But what about ignorance on the part of our LAW-MAKERS ? What about these elected Members of Congress who vote to pass laws they haven’t even read? That’s right, haven’t even read.

We are paying these people to pass our laws, and in the majority of cases they don’t even take time to read the laws they pass.

Well, ignorance should be no excuse for our professional politicians in Congress who vote to pass laws when they don’t even know what they contain.

And who do you think writes these laws, our elected legislators? Guess again. The staff writes the laws. And most of these young staff people have never lived in the real world, and know nothing about the troubles they cause with these never-ending laws.

What we need is fewer laws, fewer staff members, and removal of entrenched incumbents in Congress. Ignorance of the law is no excuse for our Congress, any more than for the rest of us. What we need is term limits and a Congress made up of citizen legislators.

Citizens for Term Limits believes the only solution is limited terms for our congressional legislators, with a new supply of fresh faces and new blood in the halls of Congress.
